Nokia has broken two optical transport records in real-world field trials on GlobalConnect’s live optical network in Europe. The demonstration used Nokia’s sixth generation super-coherent Photonic Service Engine, PSE-6s, to achieve 1.2 Tb/s over metro distances (118km) and 800 Gb/s over long haul distances (2,019 km), both using a single wavelength.

Google Fiber is now offering 5 Gbps speeds in certain markets. Customers in Kansas City, West Des Moines, and the Salt Lake City metropolitan area will be the first to get the option for the speedier tier, which is rolling out now. Late last year, Google started testing limited access to Fiber’s faster 5-gig and even 8-gig packages for some customers in those same areas.

Infinera announced that Infinera’s ICE6 800G coherent optical solution has been deployed to modernize and increase capacity on the transpacific Unity Submarine Cable System, which spans 9,620 kilometers and provides operators with a direct cable route linking Japan and the U.S. By upgrading to Infinera’s ICE6 solution, the cable system will double capacity and provide operators with the highest capacity services at the lowest cost per bit.

Arelion (formerly Telia Carrier) announced a new Point-of-Presence (PoP) in Osaka, Japan. The new PoP will provide high-speed IP Transit services to content providers and enterprises across Osaka’s metropolitan area. Arelion recently announced global 40G Ethernet Virtual Circuit (VC) availability and will offer this key product in its new PoP to facilitate digital transformation in Asian markets.
