Intel, Ericsson, AT&T, Facebook and Others Withdraw from MWC PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 12 February 2020 11:57

The following large industry players have reached out and confirmed to Telecom Review North America that they have cancelled MWC attendance due to health concerns for their employees:

  • AT&T
  • Intel
  • Sony
  • LG
  • Amazon
  • VIVO
  • Ericsson
  • Facebook
  • TCL

“Out of an abundance of caution, Facebook employees won’t be attending this year’s Mobile World Congress due to the evolving public health risks related to coronavirus,” said a spokesperson for Facebook, in a message worded not unlike a number of others that have been put out by others choosing not to attend. “We will continue to collaborate with the GSMA and our partners and thank them for their efforts.”

Sony, Amazon, LG, ZTE, and Ericsson to name but a few are staying away — the annual trade show is in trouble.

Effective February 12 the MWC has been cancelled by the GSMA.

The annual international telco industry event typically attracts more than 100,000 delegates from around 200 countries across the conference’s four days — with every major telco and tech giant exhibiting (with the exception of Apple which prefers its own events).

Following the outbreak and continued spreading of the novel corona virus, Ericsson adhered to recommendations from relevant national authorities and international bodies, such as the WHO. The company has already taken a number of precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of employees and to minimize the impact on the company’s operations.

There are many other entities that have already withdrawn and many others contemplating the same.

After an extensive internal risk assessment, Ericsson has decided to take further precautionary measures by withdrawing from MWC Barcelona 2020, the largest event in the telecom industry.

Ericsson appreciates that GSMA have done everything they can to control the risk. However, as one of the largest exhibitors, Ericsson has thousands of visitors in its hall each day and even if the risk is low, the company cannot guarantee the health and safety of its employees and visitors.

Börje Ekholm, President and CEO, Ericsson, says: “The health and safety of our employees, customers and other stakeholders are our highest priority. This is not a decision we have taken lightly. We were looking forward to showcasing our latest innovations at MWC in Barcelona. It is very unfortunate, but we strongly believe the most responsible business decision is to withdraw our participation from this year’s event.”
