Verizon Aims to “Create the Networks that Move the World Forward” PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 21 November 2019 08:08

Eric Cevis is President of Verizon Partner Solutions, responsible for domestic and international wholesale strategy; including marketing, sales, customers and wholesale business operations.

On Day 3 of MEF19, Nan Chen, President of MEF, sat down for a ‘Fireside Chat’ with Cevis.

First, Cevis spoke about what is trending in the marketplace. They agreed that while there is a need to embrace ethernet activity as bandwidth demands increase, it’s necessary to also look beyond the ethernet. “We need to look at what we are doing from a SD-WAN standpoint.

Software-defined networking and virtualization will drive cost out of the network allowing for scalability. “This will become important for Verizon and for our partners as we look to adopt and work on applications like IoT, AI and machine learning.”

Interoperability is being spoken about considerably from the keynote speakers throughout the week. Cevis reflected on an interoperable carrier partnership with Colt in 2015 and the benefits for both companies.

“We were very pleased with the results. We understood what we both needed to do in order to allow us to interoperate together. It really helped us evolve and scale on a global basis. It allowed us to take advantage of offering new products and services using IoT”.

Verizon have been successful in this space and now have a number of use cases. As an example, Verizon's Intelligent Track and Trace Cold Chain customers can assign a 4G LTE tracking device to monitor high-value assets and perishable goods throughout delivery.

Verizon Partner Solutions (VPS) is a wholesale service provider for global voice, data and Internet solutions. They also provide cloud and security solutions. Throughout the discussion, Cevis spoke at length about the importance of network security.

“We must continue to look at cyber breaches that are taking place in our networks. We need to make sure to protect our networks”.

Network security is vitally important as we lead up to the Industry 4.0 and see an exponential rise in connected devices. “We’re talking about going from a thousand devices in a 4G environment to billions of devices on a 5G network”.

He went on to say that Verizon’s main purpose is to “Create the Networks that Move the World Forward”. He also mentioned their hashtag, #forwardtogether.

“We can provide so much more value and scalability  together on a global basis than we could in our own individual niches”.

“The industry is in its prime for digital transformation, it’s an exciting time”.
